Dear Mr. Nason:

Kudos on a well written and insightful article. As a new business owner (18 months) from a former corporate (legal) background (20 years), I have personally lived through the disappointments and failures of our SBA and banking industry. You said it beautifully.

This article rather astutely defines the overall situations and the core problems ... and, sa noted, "a new wave of credit problems is about to roll in" and "recovery is a long way off".

Now that the financial institutions have been bailed out by the TARP, the bank management is "playng it safe and ultra conservative". They (bank management EMPLOYEES ... CEOs, etc.) are just trying to maintain their positions to keep their salaries and bonuses. Nothing is going to change until the banks have exhausted their ability to collect enough fees and charges to maintain a profitable or breakeven operation. Banks will only increase lending when they are economically forced to do so for their economic survival. The banks undermined the economy by their defrauding our economic system; now they are just trying to hold onto their positions to ride out the disaster that they created. It is every man for themselves.

I agree with your statements, not much has really been done. I see clients all the time that their business lines have been reduced. Banks preach "relationships", but they basically kick you in the knees when you need them most. However, there other lending alternative available.

An absolute Bulls-eye! You nailed it! Well said and well written. Should be required reading for every lender in every bank. The fact is that a lot of the banks are in worse shape than their business customers. Since they have neither the capital (nor can they raise it) and reserves to take the hits, they are in survival mode. The truth is that they could not qualify for a loan from themselves let alone make loans to their customers.
They are being plain dumb in a lot of cases which fear and panic will cause in otherwise good folks. Unfortunately the worst is yet to come if things do not turn PDQ....which is unlikely given the circus in D.C. The banks/bankers are not in denial...they know the industry is in deep crapola. With the CRE loans now tanking in earnest they have no choice but to....extend...pretend.....and pray (What I call the "EPP Mode") They just can't admit it publicly. That's why your article is so dead on. The king has no clothes, the banks won't/can't lend, and the government ain't going to help you.

Dennis,

Again right on the money, my younger brother owns his own business and you described exactly his source of financing and the fact that he paid down his business line only to have it frozen.
